Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 – Nikon mount – Initial overview

Metz Mecablitz 58 AF-2 from the Canadian Metz site

I’ve been dragging my feet on this one as I had some issues with the demo unit I borrowed from the dealer.  I’ve talked to them today and hopefully we will have that addressed by early next week.  My issues were not normal, so I will wait until the resolution to give my full review.

So far, here are my thoughts.  I love the way it screws down onto the flash mount, instead of the single lever on the SB-900.  I think that some do not like this, but for me it was a reassuring feature.  I am better now, but at times I was worried that the SB-900 would fall off because I didn’t flip the lever over fully.  I’m just a little paranoid about some things, but as usual, this is just my opinion from using the two flashes.

Also the Metz has an all metal foot on this flash.  I believe the 50 AF-1 also has a metal foot, but I’m not certain of the smaller units.  I know I’ve used a flash in the past that had a plastic foot, with metal pins sticking out and I wasn’t comfortable sliding it on and off my camera very much.

I like the fact that there is a light in the front to have a small catch light while you bounce, but I’m not sure how much I’d use it after the novelty wears off.

I’ll leave the quality of the flash itself to the next installment, after I have everything cleared up with the issue I had.
